Qatari paid millions for World Cup
The Sunday Times said it had obtained millions of emails and other documents relating to alleged payments made by Mohamed Bin Hammam, the then FIFA executive member for Qatar.
It alleged that Bin Hammam, who is also the ex-Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president, used slush funds to pay out the cash to top football officials to win a “groundswell” of support for Qatar’s World Cup bid.
Bin Hammam, who launched an abortive challenge against incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter, resigned from his FIFA and AFC posts in 2012, shortly before he was banned for life from football administration by the global governing body’s ethics committee.
The newspaper said Bin Hammam had made payments of up to $200,000 into accounts controlled by the presidents of 30 African football associations, and hosted hospitality events in Africa at which he handed out further funds, to get backing for Qatar’s bid.
Bin Hammam also paid $1.6 million into bank accounts controlled by Jack Warner, the former vice-president of FIFA, $450,000 of which was before the vote for the World Cup, the Sunday Times said.
Warner was one of the 22 people who in 2010 decided to award Russia the 2018 World Cup and Qatar the 2022 tournament. He stood down in 2011.
The latest allegations come two months after Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper alleged that a company owned by Hammam had paid money to Warner.
Bin Hammam did not respond to questions from the Sunday Times and his son declined to comment on his behalf, the newspaper said.
It quoted the Qatari committee behind the World Cup bid as denying that Bin Hammam played any secret role in their campaign, or had any knowledge of the alleged payments.
The decision to give the World Cup to Qatar, a country with little football history, provoked widespread condemnation particularly over health concerns for leading players forced to play in the desert nation’s stifling summer heat.
Blatter said in May that it was a mistake to choose Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup because of the country’s sweltering summertime climate.

Montolivo breaks leg, Dutch edge Ghana
AC Milan captain Montolivo was injured in the early stages of the friendly at Fulham’s Craven Cottage following a crunching tackle from Ireland defender Alex Pearce.
Skippering Italy on the night he needed several minutes of treatment and was seen mouthing “it’s broken” before eventually being carried off.
“Montolivo has what we suspected, a broken tibia,” Italy physician Enrico Castellacci said.
“I haven’t seen the X-ray yet to evaluate the extent of it but for a broken bone you can expect surgery.”
Montolivo played seven times in Italy’s World Cup qualifying campaign and had been expected to be a key member of the team in Brazil.
To make matters worse for Italian coach Cesare Prandelli, he also saw Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who had come on for Montolivo, forced off with an injury before half-time.
Prandelli, whose side kick off their World Cup campaign against England on June 14, has yet to prune his provisional 30-man squad down to a final group of 23 and he will now have to decide who will replace Montolivo.
In Rotterdam, Holland continued their build-up to the finals with a 1-0 win over fellow Brazil-bound Ghana, Manchester United striker Robin van Persie’s fifth minute goal proving decisive.
The Dutch, who open their World Cup campaign against titleholders Spain in a rematch of the 2010 final, have only one further prep lined up, against Wales on Wednesday in Amsterdam.
Van Persie’s goal came after a neat build-up between Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben.
The 2010 quarter-finalists Ghana were unable to produce any real chances against a stout Dutch defence but looked in good physical shape ahead of their opening World Cup game against the United States on June 14.
Dutch coach Louis van Gaal, who takes over at Manchester United after the World Cup, said: “We created quite a few chances even if the game wasn’t of great quality.
“I’m very happy with the way my new (5-3-2) system worked. For sure it’s not attractive as the old system of 4-3-3, you shouldn’t wait for a great show with 5-3-2.
“But up against Ghana, which is a great side, this system worked really well.
“There will be critics but I assume and I truly believe in this system and in my players chosen to carry it out.”
In Lisbon, Portugal, without injured star striker Cristiano Ronaldo (thigh), Pepe and Raul Meireles, played out a goalless draw with Greece.
The fixture was a rematch of the Euro 2004 final in the Portuguese capital which the hosts under then coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, now boss of Brazil, lost 1-0.
Portugal coach Paulo Bento said: “Tonight we couldn’t call on many players, not only Cristiano, and I reckon we put up a good display.”
Portugal open in Brazil against Germany, before the USA and then Ghana in Group G.
Croatia tuned up for their clash with hosts Brazil in the World Cup curtain-raiser with a 2-1 win over Mali, while in Oslo Fabio Capello’s Russia were held 1-1 by Norway.
Elsewhere, Algeria saw off Armenia 3-1 and Bosnia Herzegovina beat Ivory Coast 2-1 with Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko responsible for both of Bosnia’s goals.

Kifaru stun champs Ndovu
MACHAKOS, Kenya, June 1 – Harun Lubisia was the hero after converting a sudden death penalty to send UAP Kifaru to the finals of 12th Bamburi Rugby Super Series in their 23-19 win over defending champions Ndovu in a pulsating match played at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium on Saturday.
Kifaru that features players from the University sides will meet Papa Nguvu who eliminated Bollore Chui 30-23 in the finals set for next weekend at RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi.
“It was a tough match but I’m happy we managed to win the match although not easy. We were playing a good side who are defending champions and I congratulated the boys for giving their best.
“They came up a better side in the second half and that’s why they levelled the scores but above all I’m happy for Lubisia who took us to the finals. We are now going to prepare for the finals and hope to become champions,” Kifaru coach Charles Ngovi stated after the match.
Kifaru were a brighter side in the first half, with Ezra Lagat setting the pace after converting a penalty before Paul Muikia extended the lead through a drop goal.
Andrew Chogo pulled back with a try but Martin Tubula touched down moments later for Clayne Okallo to convert as captain Rocky Aguko scored a penalty to give the Ngovi side 14- 5 lead at the break.
Ndovu that features players from Top Fry Nakuru RFC, Western Bulls and Kisumu, resumed the better side managing to come seven points down to restore parity after scoring two tries with Giles LIttlewood touching down first for Calvin Otieno to convert but Lubisia scored a penalty to see Kifaru still lead the score sheet.
Kelvin Omiyo broke through to touch the white wash from the left as Javan Murayi’s kick went through to level the scores at 19-19 and send the clash to extra time.
Ndovu conceded an infringement and Lubisia stepped in for the golden chance after converting the penalty that took them to the finals.
In the earlier kick-off, unbeaten Nguvu made their intentions clear by taking a 15-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes with Peter Kepher putting them in front in the second minute with a penalty just outside Chui’s 22-metre line.
Ken Moseti’s good run on the right wing and sublime pass yielded Papa’s first try in the ninth through Ian Indimuli.
Pacy Moseti again provided the pass that put Papa at 13-0 after his good run on the right and was reciprocated by captain Allan Omuka, who scored their second try as Kepher made no mistake from the conversion.
Chui missed a penalty in the 17th minute before Papa added another penalty through Kepher to open an 18-0 lead against a hard-fighting Chui, who reduced the deficit with a 25th penalty through Erick Okoma.
Papa could not capitalise on their numerical strength to widen the gap after Charles Kanyi was sin-binned for infringement.
They however managed to score a try seconds from halftime through Brian Omondi to enjoy a 23-3 lead at the midway hooter.
The second half belonged to Chui as they posted 18-7, but was not enough from crashing out. George Okowa scored a penalty and a try in the first five minutes to cut Papa’s advantage to 12 points.
Papa responded almost immediately through Shabani Ahmed that Kepher converted, but a Richard Sidindi try in the 68th and a 79th converted try from Anthony Nyandigisi gave Chui some hope, but it was too little too late.

Rudisha, Kiprop conquered in Oregon
The answer was a resounding no.
The penultimate event of the program saw Rudisha, the Olympic 800m champion and world record-holder, put forth a gallant effort before fading badly to seventh place in his first race in nearly a year due to a knee injury while Nijel Amos of Botswana sprinted to victory in a world-leading 1:43.63 to break the meeting record.
“It was tough, but I’m happy to run 1:44,” said Rudisha after running 1:44.87.
In the Bowerman Mile, the meeting’s signature event, Kiprop saw his bid for a record fourth consecutive victory go up in flames on the final lap as world indoor champion Ayanleh Souleiman charged to victory in 3:47.32, breaking IAAF Diamond League record and the US all-comers’ record.
“My dream was 3:47 or 3:48,” said the 21-year-old Souleiman, who won 800m bronze at last summer’s World Championships. “I’m happy today.”
Souleiman’s time, which makes him the 10th-fastest performer in history, broke the IAAF Diamond League record of 3:49.09 set by Kenya’s Haron Keitany at this meeting in 2011, and the meeting record of 3:48.28 run by Daniel Kipchirchir Komen of Kenya in 2007.
Kiprop looked strong early, running behind the pacemaker in second place through 800m. After the pacemaker stepped off on the bell lap, Kenya’s Silas Kiplagat surged three meters into the lead approaching the final curve. Kiprop covered the move but could not stave off the hard-charging Souleiman, who flew into the lead and never looked back.
Kiplagat finished second in a personal best of 3:47.88. Aman Wote finished third in an Ethiopian record of 3:48.60, while Kiprop faded all the way to seventh in 3:50.26.
“I was expecting to run close to 3:47 and unfortunately it wasn’t my day,” Kiprop said. “I don’t know. I wasn’t comfortable. In the last 200m I wasn’t responding. I think this is due to that we came from the World Relays last weekend and came straight here.”
Rudisha calls performance ‘a good start’
Like Kiprop, Rudisha looked a lot like his peak self during the early goings of the race. His stride hardly looked laboured during the opening 400m, as he followed right behind the pacemaker through the halfway point in 49.82.
It is normally at this point where Rudisha begins to open up his stride and pull away from the field, but after nearly 12 months away from racing, that next gear was clearly absent from Rudisha’s arsenal.
So too was his speed endurance. Although he was able to fight off a challenge from world champion Mohammed Aman on the backstretch, he had no answer for the surge that followed in the final 200 metres and was eventually swallowed up by six runners.
“In the beginning, I started pushing,” said Rudisha, whose seventh-place time of 1:44.87 was nearly four seconds slower than his world record of 1:40.91 from the London Olympics. “Only the last 100m was a little bit tough. I started a bit late with my training this year, only in March, due to the knee problems. It has been like a crash programme to get ready.
“I need to sharpen up to get competition-ready. The body needs competition to build that speed. I was tiring over the last 100 metres. I’ll go back and see how I can build up so I can finish next time. But to be out for so long, I am satisfied with my time of 1:44.”
Olympic silver medallist Amos was impressive in getting by both Rudisha and Aman, breaking the meeting record of 1:43.68 set in 2011 by Abubaker Kaki of Sudan. Aman, the fastest 800m runner in the world in 2013, finished second in 1:43.99 while Kaki finished third in 1:44.09.
“It shows I’m in good shape,” Amos said of his performance. “I just ran my race. I didn’t care who was in the race; I was going to run my race all the way through.”

Excited Wenger pens new deal
“Arsenal Holdings plc confirms that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has signed a new three-year extension to his current contract with Arsenal Football Club plc, a wholly owned subsidiary, taking his tenure at the club to May 2017,” said a statement issued by the Gunners’ parent company to the London Stock Exchange.
The Frenchman is the current longest-serving manager in the English Premier League, having joined the north London side in 1996 and this season he ended Arsenal’s nine-year wait for a major trophy by overseeing their come-from-behind FA Cup final win against Hull City at Wembley.
Wenger, 64, was a surprise choice to succeed Bruce Rioch as Arsenal manager when he arrived at the club’s then Highbury headquarters in September 1996 from Japanese club Grampus Eight.
However, he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in the first half of his 17-and-a-half-year Arsenal tenure. But prior to this month’s dramatic 3-2 win over Hull, he had not lifted a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup.
The campaign just finished also saw Wenger guide Arsenal to a 17th consecutive season of Champions League football.
Bob Wilson, the goalkeeper in Arsenal’s League and FA Cup ‘double’ winning side of 1970/71 and the goalkeeping coach during the first few years of Wenger’s time at the club, told BBC Radio Five: “This is a guy who works 24 hours a day all year around.
“He hates to lose and revolutionised the game in the country. Some say he has too much power but a guy who dedicates himself to it like he does, you cherish,” added Wilson of Wenger, who oversaw Arsenal ‘doubles’ in both the 1997/98 and 2001/02 seasons.

Amrouche sent off as Stars qualify
The Belgium-based winger who was playing for the Kenya for the second time converted a free-kick from outside the box in the 57th minute at Mitsamiouli International Stadium before Ben El Fardou levelled in the 72nd after following defensive lapse.

MAINA NJENGA Reveals That Before His Shooting FERDINAND WAITITU Threatened Him With DEATH If He Refused To Be ICC WITNESS For UHURU
FORMER Mungiki leader Maina Njenga says a number of top government officials want to kill him over a matter arising from one of the Kenyan cases at the International Criminal Court.
Speaking from his hospital bed at Avenue Hospital, Nairobi, yesterday, Njenga said these officials want him dead because he refused to record a statement and become a witness in one ICC case.
In a statement to police seen by the Star, Njenga identified Nairobi politician Ferdinand Waititu as the go-between for the unnamed officials, saying the latter had approached him with a view to persuading him to become a witness.
Njenga is recuperating from an attack by unidentified gunmen at Kari Farm, Nyahururu, last weekend.
“It is not about land, and, for your information, Mungiki no longer exists; some people are pursuing me to eliminate me through calculated moves after I refused to record the ICC statements”, said Njenga.
According to Njenga, people are being murdered in other areas and buried in Kitengela so as to stir tensions in a strategy that is part of a plot to finish him.
Njenga said that before he was shot at last Saturday, his guards had spotted a number of men who took photos of his house and the vehicle he was using hours before the incident.
“One of my aides, who died in the incident, saw these men and met them in the Olkalao area - and when he asked them who they were, they referred to themselves as police officers in a crew”, said Njenga.
Njenga said he is aware the police have hired what he described as a specialized crew whose mission is to assassinate selected persons that the government feels are a nuisance.
“We decided to quit Mungiki and reform, we believe in the living God and we are not turning back, that is why He has been on my side, and, for sure, the truth shall prevail for the world to know”, he said.
He reiterated that allegations he was fighting with his brother for control of landholdings in Kitengela were false and in bad faith, aiming to create division among family members.
In a police statement seen by the Star, Njenga claimed that three vehicles had followed his convoy of two cars for some time before the shooting ambush.
The copy of the statement read in part: "I had recorded a statement at Nairobi Area [police] that my life was in danger and that I was suspicious after Mr. Waititu Ferdinand had approached me to make a statement as a witness in the ICC cases at The Hague.
“I had told him that during the violence I was in prison and so I could not make a statement. He told me that if I did not make the statement I would die mysteriously”.
The fingers of Njenga's left hand were grazed by a bullet and are still heavily bandaged, but all indications are he will soon leave Avenue and be referred to outpatient services.

Mainz striker Maxim Choupo-Moting, who also scored against Macedonia, pulled one back 15 minutes from time for Cameroon who are reportedly locked in a battle with their federation over bonuses for the tournament.
“We’re in the final phase of World Cup preparations. These two matches were very important,” said Finke.
“A loss in a friendly warm-up match isn’t a catastrophe though.”
The Africans are in a tough World Group Group A with hosts and favourites Brazil, Croatia and Mexico as they bid to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since 1990.
But with their provisional 28-man squad to be cut to 23 by June 2 they showed problems in defence with Nicolas N’Koulou and Joel Matip in a central role, supported by Allan Nyom and Gaetan Bong on either side failing to provide the necessary guarantees.
“I’ve seen a lot of things which will allow me to make my final selection,” said Finke.
“Every loss hurts, we don’t like it, but it’s a loss on which we can work.”
The German coach said he had been particularly impressed by young Lens striker Edgar Salli, 21.
“He had a game which I really liked,” he said. “Every player had a chance to show his physical and mental form.
“Against Germany we’re going there for a result. I’m going to try and get an idea of who the final 11 will be.”
Samuel Eto’o, who remained on the bench Thursday as planned, is expected play at least 20 minutes against Germany on Sunday.
Paraguay have not qualified for the World Cup with their focus on the 2015 Copa America.

Scholes wrong about Rooney – Gerrard
Speaking earlier this week, Scholes said that Rooney, alongside whom he played for eight seasons at Old Trafford, may be “worn out” because he has been playing professionally since the age of 16.
But ahead of England’s friendly against Peru at Wembley Stadium on Friday, Gerrard argued that Rooney’s performances over the 2013-14 campaign proved that the 28-year-old can be one of the stars of the forthcoming World Cup.
“For me, I think Paul Scholes is wrong,” Gerrard told a media briefing at the England team hotel in Watford, 20 miles (32 kilometres) north of London.
“For me he’s been Manchester United’s best player throughout (the season), in the league and in Europe. I think Wayne Rooney’s been in terrific form.
“I can only judge him and have my opinion on him on what I’ve seen. His performances in the Manchester United team have been really positive.
“He’s worked hard this week. He decided to do his own week’s training and he seems in an awfully better frame of mind going into this tournament than when he had injuries on his mind last time (2010).
“So for me, I’m excited about where Wayne Rooney’s at.”
Rooney is expected to start up front alongside Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge for the game against Peru, which will be England’s last friendly game in front of their own fans before the World Cup.
Although teenage left-back Luke Shaw is doubtful due to a cold, manager Roy Hodgson will have an otherwise fully fit squad to choose from.
- ‘Not an experimental team’ -
Inopportune injuries have been a recurring theme of England’s most recent pre-World Cup training camps, but despite the squad’s clean bill of health, Gerrard warned against getting carried away.
“I think it’s a bit early to come out with any ludicrous shouts about how good this team and this squad is,” said the Liverpool midfielder.
“We’ll be judged on the games in the World Cup. But I’ll agree with the manager that training was very positive, very sharp and intense.
“If we can take that into the games, it’ll certainly give us a better chance of being successful.”
England fly to Miami after Friday’s game, where they will play further friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras before tackling Italy in their opening World Cup group match in Manaus on June 14.
Hodgson suggested that he would select a strong line-up to face Pablo Bengoechea’s Peru, who failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Asked if his team selection would provide any clues as to the side likely to line up against Italy, he replied: “I’m looking at the three matches, I suppose.
“I’m affected by the fact that this is our last game in England and it’s a massive crowd and a huge responsibility. So it certainly won’t be an experimental team.
“If anything, I’ll be veering more towards the players that have been doing the job for us up to now because I’ve got the two matches in Miami to make more experimentation.”
Hodgson also revealed that he hoped to take standby players John Stones and Jon Flanagan to Miami, subject to the approval of their respective club managers.
Everton centre-back Stones, 20, and 21-year-old Liverpool full-back Flanagan were both placed on standby in case any of the defenders in Hodgson’s 23-man World Cup squad succumbed to injury.

Moment of truth for Stars in Comoros
Stars carry a slim 1-0 advantage to the clash but the islanders cannot be underrated after giving Kenya a hard time in their home turf a fortnight ago.
It took Belgium’s Lommel United midfielder Johanna Omolo’s thunderbolt in the 34th minute to separate the two sides in a game France AC Ajaccio’s forward Dennis Oliech spurned the chance to double the advantage from close range chance in the second half.
In the lead up to the second leg, the international career of the country’s record goal scorer looks all but over after he fell out with head coach, Adel Amrouche on disciplinary grounds that led his dishonourable dismissal from the starting XI.

Qualifying mission
Both teams are on a mission to secure passage for the second round and retain hope to progress further and feature in Group C of the final qualifiers that features 2013 Afcon runners-up Burkina Faso, Gabon and Angola.
Having hard a taste of the obdurate islanders, Amrouche is likely to set up his team to sit on their first leg need and capitalise on breakaway chances of set play opportunities.
Comoros on the other hand, showed glimpses they could cause trouble despite their lowly 184th world ranking and home advantage will be inspiration to cause an upset.
Stars will rely on the fortitude of their captain and English Premier League side, Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama, 22 and his elder brother Macdonald Mariga who plies his trade at Serie A giants Inter Milan.
“We are expecting a tough match but we will work hard to come home with positive results.
“Comoros are a good team and they know how we play so we will go attacking because if we defend, they might score and equalise or even go ahead that’s why we want to score more goals to be sure of progressing to the next round,” the skipper underlined.
“Every player’s dream here is to qualify for Afcon since its long time we were there; we will take one match at a time and hope to give our best,” he added before they departed for Moroni.
Comoros are banking on English Championship side Millwall midfielder and captain Nadjim Abdou to drive them to what would rank as their biggest achievement in football- toppling a side that has made five Afcon appearances.
“We were not as good as we wanted to be but hopefully we will play better in the return fixture. All in all we have another 90 minutes to play for in Moroni and that is our best opportunity to seal the game,” the Comoros skipper said after the first leg in Nairobi.
Besides Oliech, Amrouche has axed three other players involved in the opening tie with little known Geoffrey Kakata who plies his trade for domestic league side KRA slotting to fill in the record scorer’s huge boots.
The arrival of Norway based custodian Arnold Origi, who missed the first leg due to engagements with his Lillestrom side, is a major boost to the team that forced the Belgian to axe local side AFC Leopards keeper Wycliffe Kasaya.
KF Tirana midfielder Francis Kahata who watched the first leg from the terraces was included in the travelling party of 19, stepping in for Oman Based Jamal Mohammed who was ruled out by illness whilst domestic champions, Gor Mahia, left back Musa Mohammed, made the team at the expense of his team mate and midfielder Anthony Akumu.
Comoros will be lifted by the return of their notable players including French ligue 2 AS Nancy midfielder Fouad Rachid who was unavailable in the first leg due to commitments with his club.
Forwards Soule Mohammed and Fouad Bachirou who squandered chances will be leading the goal hunt for the hosts.
Amouche charges will be looking to improve on their performance after bonding for two weeks compared to the first match where they had less than two days to train together after the late arrival of foreign based players.
The Belgian will likely retain most of his first XI with Origi starting in goal, David Owino on full-back right with Aboud Omar manning the left. USA based Lawrence Olum and David Ochieng are probable centre halves.
The midfield will be anchored by Wanyama, Mariga whose due a start after impressing from the bench in Nairobi, Omolo, Genk’s Ayub Timbe and Kahata.
MC Alger forward Edwin Lavatsa and Allan Wanga will likely lead the forward line.
The winner of the tie has to wait for Sunday to establish their second round opponents when Lesotho welcome Liberia to Maseru trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Monrovia.
