NAIROBI, Kenya, June 19 – Cash strapped Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side Nairobi City Stars have released five players to cut costs ahead of next weekend’s second leg.
Club chairman Peter Jabuya told Capital Sport they have been forced to drop former Tusker FC forward George Midenyo, defender Moses Odhiambo, Victor Maloba, midfielder Raquib Milanzi and Dennis Ng’ang’a who joined the Brewers.
“We have decided to release them because we are struggling financially and due to that I want to remain with 25 players from our usual 30 whom I can handle.
“Its not easy to maintain the team with little money we receive from KPL that’s why a lot of good players come and leave either during mid or at the beginning of the season,” the Kawangware based side boss declared.
However, Jabuya confirmed they have cast their net wide looking for a striker before the June transfer deadline to partner with midfielders Levy Muaka and Oscar Mbugua who both made a come back to the team.
“The boys need to be motivated ahead of the second leg but although we are searching for a striker, we are good to go since Muaka has rejoined us after spending a year in Germany while Mbugua returns after recovering from an injury that sideline him since last season,” the chairman added.
Commenting on head coach Tim Bryett, who replaced Nigerian Robinson Ndubuisi in April, until this month Jabuya said, “The coach is still with us despite agreeing to help us on voluntary basis for two months, if there will be changes I will announce but for now he will continue with his duties.”
City Stars are now joined by champions Gor Mahia as the only teams in the league without sponsors with Stars seeking to unhook themselves out of the relegation zone that has seen them survive the axe in the past three seasons.
Meanwhile, Mathare United have suffered a huge blow after forward Kenneth Wendo declined to renew his contract that elapsed last Saturday.
“It seems he has other plans and we cannot force him since his contract expired four days ago so I think he is in a better position to explain more.
“It’s a big blow but we will replace him and add two more to strengthen our squad but we have good players who are capable of doing the job,” Team Manager Willy Muruya told Capital Sport.
Wendo who joined the Slum Boys last season from Tusker FC becomes the second player to exit the club following the departure of forward Meshack Karani who headed to Chemelil Sugar.
Mathare, the 2010 champions have not had a good stint in the first leg that has seen them occupy 12th on the log on 17 points.
