Chemelil Sugar cane Bandari

CHEMELIL-ULINZI NAIROBI, Kenya, June 9 – Attacking midfielder Hamisi Mwinyi scored his first goal of the season against former side Bandari as Chemelil Sugar bounced back from a first loss of the campaign to silence the hosts 1-0 in Mombasa.

Mwinyi netted the lone goal in the 25th minute to condemn the Dockers to their third loss of the Kenyan Premier League season at home as the sugar millers rose to third on the log with Bandari remaining rooted in 12th on 14 points.

“We were under no pressure since we were playing away and my boys normally play comfortable away.

“We dominated the match since our strategy worked compared when we are at home where we get pressure from fans who usually want early goals,” Chemelil head coach and former Harambee Stars player, Mike Mururi, who is yet to lose away thus far offered after the win.

His opposite number and former Stars coach Twahir Muhiddin, conceded his side fell on their own sword.

“We deserved to lose since there was no coordination on the pitch even after Shaban Kenga’s introduction in the midfield there was no change since they did not push forward.

“We could have scored if we worked as a team but we have to go back to the drawing board and sign players in the positions we are weak since we still have something to fight for. The players should pick themselves up and move on,” a disappointed Muhiddin added.

Chemelil started with their best XI that saw forward Meshack Karani who joined the side on a free transfer from Mathare United partner Innocent Wafula upfront.

The duo combined well to give the hosts defenders a hard time with Wafula bringing a cross from the right after four minutes but Georson Likono saw his powerful header go wide of goal.

The Dockers came close in the 17th through Alloyce Mangi who had a chance to break the deadlock but failed to capitalize on Mohammed Mwachiponi’s pinpoint cross by uncorking a feeble shot that failed to bother the visiting keeper.

Seven minutes later, the hosts were punished when Karani beat defender Humphrey Okoti on the left to feed Mwinyi who made no mistake to tap in past Stars keeper, Wilson Obungu for the opener.

His goal was followed by several attacks from the same flank with Likono managing to break through two defenders to unleash a cracker that forced the Dockers keeper to spill the ball for a fruitless corner.

In the 32nd, Bandari surged forward in search of the equaliser with Eric Okoth getting a chance from close range but ended up wasting Mwachiponi’s deflected delivery.

The pressure forced Muhiddin to introduce Kenga on the stroke of half time but the winger who was making his debut this season after completing his six month loan spell at Gor Mahia.

In the second half, the Bandari boss hauled off Bruno Sserunkuma for Justus Anene but the forward could not inspire the hosts to at least salvage a point as the visitors held on in defence to collect maximum points.

The Sugar Millers next host bottom placed KCB on Saturday while Bandari will travel to Nairobi to take on AFC Leopards a day later.
