Germany get rousing welcome

MULLER-KAZAKSTAN PORTO SEGURO, June 8- Several hundred people gave Germany a rousing welcome Sunday when they arrived at their World Cup base in Brazil.

The squad travelled overnight from Frankfurt with a stop-over in Salvador, capital of Bahia state, where they will play their opening Group G match against Portugal on June 16.

Several hundred people cheered the players as they left their team bus at Santa Cruz Cabralia and boarded a boat to take them to Santo Andre, where they will reach their specially-built ‘Campo Bahia’ training base.

Fans waved Brazilian and German flags and music was played for the occasion.

Once the Germans, dressed in black suits, reached their hotel, they were also treated to a demonstration of capoeira martial-art style dancing.

A retired German couple in their 60s made the long trip to Bahia to welcome their heroes. “We left Bremen on February 7 for Uruguay where we bought a campervan,” 63-year-old Marita Focke told AFP.

Her husband Werner, 66, added: “The aim was to come and support the players and to see where they are based. We even spent the night at the airport so we could see them.”

After facing the Portuguese, Germany will play Ghana in Fortaleza and the United States in Recife.
