Greek players turn down bonus

GREECE-COSTA-RICA ATHENS, June 30 – Greece’s World Cup players have turned down their World Cup bonus and called for the money to be used to build a national training centre in the cash-strapped country, reports said Monday.

The team, beaten by Costa Rica on penalties on Sunday, wrote to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras saying they did not want the promised bonus.

“We do not want the extra bonus. We only play for Greece and its people,” their letter was quoted as saying.

“But we ask you to support our effort to find a land plot in order to create the training center that will house our National team.”

The reports said the prime minister vowed to help the team carry out its wish in a telephone call to the head of the Greek federation.
