According to the BBC, the teenager told the Saints’ bosses of his desire to join the Red Devils at a function following the two team’s 1-1 draw at the St Mary’s Stadium in May.
However, the club have stated they will not be letting any players leave until a new manager has been appointed, putting the brakes on a potential transfer.
For his part though, it appears Shaw has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford, and with a £27million offer already having been made for the England international, it seems the switch is now a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’.
Meanwhile, Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell has joined Stoke City after being told he would not be offered a new contract by the Cottagers.
The 31-year-old’s current deal with the London outfit will expire at the end of the month after which he will make the switch to the Potters.
“Steve was much in demand and we are delighted to have won the race to secure his signature,” said Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes.
“Like Phil Bardsley, Steve brings great experience to our squad and I’m sure he will prove to be an excellent addition to our squad,” he added.
Sidwell, who has also had spells with Reading and Aston Villa, has put pen to a two-year contract.
