The 21km race whose title sponsor comes from Japan, was scheduled to run on July 6 at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens.
Event CEO Douglas Wakiihuri confirmed the development to Capital Sport Thursday saying they are in the process of organising a race for the kids instead.
“Due to terror threats that are witnessed in the country, we got a travelling advisory from the Japanese embassy and we were left with no option but to cancel this year’s event until next year.
“We were already going on with the preparation since we had gone to the extent of sending invites to participants who are in our data with most of them coming from Japan who are our main sponsors. We cannot ignore the advisory because safety comes first,” Wakiihuri, the 1987 World Marathon champion confirmed.
The race that is affiliated to Athletics Kenya has produced top athletes such as 2009 silver World Half Marathon medalist Philes Ongori, who won the inaugural race and 10, 000m Commonwealth champion Grace Momanyi.
Wakiihuri recently coached First Lady Margaret Kenyatta to become the first holder of her office to complete a full marathon during April 17′s London Marathon in the UK.
