NAIROBI, Kenya, June 2- Substitute Victor Ali Abondo scored a late goal to send Tusker FC to the GOtv Shield round of 32 after overcoming a resilient Western Stima 3-2 at Ruaraka Grounds on Sunday in an all Kenyan Premier League (KPL) affair.
Ismael Dunga opened the scores for the Brewers after seven minutes of play before Batambuze Shafik leveled the scores in the 63rd.
Three minutes later, David Owuor doubled the scores for Stima before Jesse Were restored parity in the 72nd as Abondo netted the winner in the 89th.
In other results, Sofapaka whitewashed coast based Vibwanga FC 8-0 while FC Talanta edged out Mahakama 2-0 as former KPL champions Oserian were eliminated after a 1-0 loss to Imara United.
Little known Mumbi Nationale beat Nzoia United 2-0.
At the Ruaraka Grounds, it was a high paced game with both sides attacking but it was the host who reacted first after breaking through on a counter attack as Were fed Dunga who did not waste the chance, firing home for the opener.
Despite the visitors piling pressure, they could cot manage to find the back of the net for the equaliser as Francis Kimanzi charges went into the break leading.
Stima were on fire in the last half scoring two quick goals within a span of three minutes with the first coming in the 63rd though Batambuze who was unmarked to restore parity before Okello capitalized on Mark Odhiambo’s poor clearance to double the scores.
It took six minutes for Tusker to come back in the game after Were leveled the scores when he pounced on the ball.
Kimanzi made double substitution, bringing in Kevin Kimani and Brian Osumba for Mugalia and Abondo.
The changes paid off for the former Harambee Stars tactician as they increased the attack up front with the important goal coming one minute to the final whistle, when Abondo’s shot beat the keeper to rest in the back of the net and progress to the round of 32.
In Monday’s fixture, cash strapped Nairobi City Stars will invite Modern Coast while Super League side Bidco United squares it out with Mathare United.
