Wenger gambles on Chambers signing

CALUM-CHAMBERS LONDON, July 28- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that signing teenager Calum Chambers for a reported fee of £16million is a risk, but it is one he is prepared to take.

The Gunners are expected to announce the 19-year-old’s transfer from Southampton on Monday, with the defender believed to have already undergone a medical and agreed personal terms.

The fee commanded by the England Under-21 international has raised many eyebrows, but Wenger believes that Chambers’ potential justifies it.

“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger has been quoted as saying.

“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”

Chambers is expected to play back-up to new signing Mathieu Debuchy at right-back, leaving Carl Jenkinson’s future at the club in doubt.
