MANILA, November 30- The head of the Palestinian Football Association on Sunday called for FIFA to suspend Israel over a raid on the body’s offices which also drew a strong response from Asian soccer authorities.
Jibril Al Rajoub said the world body should give a “red card” to Israel following last week’s raid on the soccer organisation’s headquarters in the West Bank.
He spoke as Palestine was named team of the year at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) awards night in Manila, following their victory in this year’s AFC Challenge Cup.
“I think it’s time to take sanctions. What happened last week had no precedence in the history of sport,” Al Rajoub told journalists.
“I don’t think the Israelis have the right to enjoy the status and at the same time deprive others… It’s time FIFA should raise the red card,” he added.
The AFC earlier denounced Israel’s raid, with its president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa calling the action “intolerable and unacceptable”.
Al Rajoub said three armoured cars drew up outside the Palestinian FA offices, where Israeli forces confronted staff and checked documents before leaving about 40 minutes later.
He added he was concerned travel restrictions would prevent Palestine from sending a full-strength team to January’s Asian Cup in Australia, their first major tournament.
“I’m sure that some of them will not (be allowed to travel). Even when we played the Challenge Cup, six players were prevented,” Al Rajoub said.
“I hope we can take everybody but in spite of that we have no other choice. We have determination and we will continue no matter whether the Israelis will allow everyone to come.”
The Palestinians gained entry to the Asian Cup, the continent’s top international competition, by winning the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives in May.
MANILA, November 30- Serena Williams emerged from a month-long lay-off Sunday to beat Kirsten Flipkens at the debut tournament of the International Premier Tennis League, a fast-paced, television-friendly new version of the sport.
The American world number one broke Flipkens on her first service game and then went on to systematically attack the Belgian’s second serve and triumph 6-3.
“It was fun. She played really well and she made it really entertaining for the crowd and I was happy to be there. The crowd was pumped. I was pumped,” Williams told reporters.
Williams and Lleyton Hewitt, playing for the Singapore Slammers team, earlier lost their mixed doubles match against Flipkens and Andy Murray of the Manila Mavericks team 1-6. But the powerful American got into her rhythm as the evening wore on.
Williams, who last played at the WTA Finals in Singapore, winning the tournament on October 26, admitted she was rusty at first following the break.
“Yes, it was a factor initially, but it’s good to get some match play,” she said.
“You have to just go the second you land (even though) you have this jet-lag.”
The team-oriented IPTL format, which has attracted many of the world’s top players, features ties consisting of five one-set matches.
Williams will also play in the Singapore leg of the IPTL tour from December 2 before starting her training for the regular 2015 women’s tour.
For world number six Murray, the mixed doubles win was his first in the IPTL tournament.
He later went on to beat Williams’ Singapore Slammers teammate Nick Kyrgios 6-5, after a five-minute shootout to break a 5-5 tie.
“It was nice to finish the weekend with two wins today,” Murray told reporters.
He had lost to world number nine Marin Cilic of the UAE Royals team Friday and Gael Monfils of the Indian Aces team on Saturday, while his mixed doubles partnership with Maria Sharapova also brought two consecutive losses.
After Singapore the IPTL tour moves to New Delhi before concluding the year in Dubai.
MANILA, November 30- FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Qatar was in no danger of being stripped of the 2022 World Cup as new questions arose Sunday over the awarding of hosting rights.
The world football chief reiterated his backing for the tournament after a British newspaper published fresh allegations about the bidding process.
“Ladies and gentlemen, believe me, if we see what has been said, what’s told around the world, it’s by those who are not involved exactly (in) what happens in football,” Blatter told delegates at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) awards in Manila.
“The World Cup 2022 will be played in Qatar,” he said to applause and a few whistles of support from the 400 delegates at the gala dinner in the Philippine capital.
Blatter was speaking after the Sunday Times said Britain’s bidding team for the 2018 World Cup, awarded to Russia, had a secret database containing fresh allegations about the 2018 and 2022 hosting races.
The database includes unproven claims of vote-buying and trading linked to both Qatar and Russia’s successful bids, according to the newspaper.
The report comes after deep controversy over FIFA’s probe into the bidding process, when investigator Michael Garcia said the world body had misrepresented his findings.
On Sunday FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke insisted there was “no need” to publish the investigation in full, despite widespread calls to make it public.
“Legally speaking there is no need and no reason to publish,” Valcke said in brief comments to AFP at the function in Manila.
Blatter said the next step with the investigation would be considered at the FIFA executive committee’s meeting next month in Morocco.
“Listen, we are going now to the executive committee with all this matter on the 19th in Morocco and we will have a press conference after that,” he said as he left the awards ceremony.
Blatter, who is seeking re-election for a fifth term next year, has also faced calls to step down over FIFA’s handling of the report on Qatar.
The 78-year-old Swiss enjoys strong support from the AFC, including its leader Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who is also expected to be re-elected next year.
“He came in with his executive committee to bring Asian football to the right place,” Blatter said of Shaikh Salman. “It’s (Asia) a great part of football, it’s a great part of the world,” he added.
