>>> Triumphant Gor to offer Nuttall new deal

FRANK-NATAL NAIROBI, Kenya, November 9 – After leading them to a record 14th Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title, Gor Mahia have now opened talks with head coach Frank Nuttall to offer him permanent contract.

Club Secretary General Chris Omondi confirmed to Capital Sport Sunday when he joined hundreds Gor fans in welcoming the champions at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after they made a triumphant return from Kisumu where they retained the title after stopping Ushuru FC 3-0.

“Yes Nuttall has passed the test and we will be making an offer so let’s hope he will accept because we will put what we can afford as the club,” Omondi declared.

The Scotsman, who joined the club in August after succeeding Harambee Stars head coach Bobby Williamson, told Capital Sport he is willing to stay in the club.

“I’m happy to sit down with the chairman and discuss the future and let’s see how it goes,” Nuttal who was handed a-three month probation to prove he can retain the trophy told Capital Sport.

Celebrations from the lake side city were extended to the capital where the Green Army led by their ‘commander’, Jared Obonyo famously known as Jaro Soja flocking the busy Airport five hours before their beloved team arrived chanting praises in its honour.

And when the moment they had been waiting for arrived, everything came to a standstill as the team marched out of the arrivals lounge led by Nuttall before captain Jerim Onyango emerged with the big eared cup to rapturous bedlam.

The champions departed the Airport in a convoy that snaked through Jogoo Road with the celebrations ending at the club’s secretariat at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium.

The Secretary General however, said winning the title comes with challenges that will see the self-sponsored club raise funds to facilitate the team that will represent the country at next year’s CAF Champions League.

“The journey has been very challenging but I thank our fans for supporting us in times of happiness and difficult. Winning the title means a lot in the sense that we are the most successful club in Kenya, having knocked our opponents AFC Leopards with 14 titles. We are the unrivaled champions of Kenya.

“But it also comes with the challenges of preparing the team for the continental competitions so as the Executive Committee we will seat down and plan how we will knock the sponsors’ doors.”

Commenting on the players contract that is elapsing this season among them Golden Boot winner Dan Sserunkuma and defender David Owino, Omondi said, “Talks have are going on and we hope within a month the contractual issues will have been settled.”

-A good run for Nuttall-

The coach was happy with his nine-game performance, saying the future of the club is bright.

“I’m very delighted for all the players. The quality and mentality of the players was excellent and made my three months awesome. The form of the nine games has been good having won five drew three and lost one so I’m very pleased with everybody.

“It’s great for the club to play in the continental championship once again and I’m sure they have learned from the previous experience,” Nuttall stated.

Having lifted the trophy twice, skipper and custodian Jerim Onyango is now aiming to win it for the third successive time and emulate the class of 1983.

“I feel exited winning the trophy back to back, it’s a big achievement. It’s time to rejoice and feel we did it.

“Unity, hard work and our loving fans who rallied behind us enabled us retain the title and winning it in Kisumu was so sweet. We now want to win it once again so that we can keep the trophy for good,” Onyango underscored.

Golden Boot winner Sserunkuma was pleased to inspire his side to the title having scored 16 goals this season.

“It was nice helping my team defend the trophy and win the Golden Boot. Right now I’m enjoying the victory and in few weeks I will think if I will renew my contract,” a delighted talisman Sserunkuma expressed.
