One killed, several wounded during eviction at Caxton house

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 4 – One person was killed and several others wounded during an eviction exercise that turned violent at Caxton House in Nairobi on Wednesday morning. Over 100 youths armed with crude weapons had gone to effect an eviction order at about 5am when they clashed with guards and police officers. They are also accused of looting shops in the building leading to a violent confrontation before police officers opened fire. Security guards who witnessed the incident say that the damage caused to the shops was huge. “On reaching here, I found people fleeing while carrying away many things from the shops. They were looting and even destroying the place. As they were doing this, the members of the public protested and called the police,” Johnstone Kamau, one of the guards stated. “I saw the people and they were many. Yes, a number of them were arrested but the police were completely outnumbered since they were about 400 people,” his colleague stated. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero is due to visit the building.
