Dubbed ’20 bob ni mob’, the new product offers subscribers eight minutes in voice calls across all networks in Kenya, 20 SMS and 20 MBs worth of data.
According to Airtel Kenya’s CEO Adil El Youssefi, the new product is part of the UnlimiNet package of products which was launched in February last year.
“Today’s launch is part of Airtel’s mission to conquer the Kenyan market again. Last year in February, we launched Unlimited which turned out to be one of most successful products in the industry, today’s UnlimiNet 20 is the next phase of UnlimiNet making it more affordable” El Youssefi said during the Monday morning launch.
Subscribers will also enjoy free WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter on their phones even when their data runs out.
“UnlimiNet 20 gives you value for Sh120 as other networks charge you Sh4 per minute in voice calls. No one else is giving you the kind of value that UnlimiNet is giving you,” El Youssefi said.
Additionally, customers who choose to auto-renew, their accumulated balance shall be pushed forward and added onto the new balance.
But doesn’t that kill their data business?
“No, it does not. Our mission has been to get at the heart of our customers and know what they want. We know that the price of data is a source of headache in this country hence our decision to launch the wide varieties of UnlimiNet products,” El Youssefi answered.
Airtel is therefore determined to get to the hearts of their customers using any means they see possible, and as El Youssefi said, “We have therefore paid a price to satisfy the needs of our customers in the short and the long term.”
Airtel Kenya’s Marketing Manager Levy Nyakundi at the same time explained that product was part of the company’s efforts to get closer to their customers. He explained that the product is not a reserve of a particular demographic such as an age bracket or a particular social status; rather, it is for anyone looking for value.
“The shilling has been diminishing, life is getting harder money wise, Airtel therefore wants to cater to everyone looking for value for their money.”
The new product joins other UnlimiNet products which include daily products, weekly products and monthly products. Daily products includes the UnlimiNet 50 which gives you 20 minutes on voice calls, 100 SMS and 100MBs; the UnlimiNet 100 which offers 60 minutes worth of voice calls, 500 SMS and 300MBs and the just launched UnlimiNet 20.
The product will however not benefit YU customers who are now managed by Airtel following YU’s acquisition by the company. However, the CEO said that products in favour of YU customers will soon be launched.
At the same event, El Youssefi said the company will bring 4G network to their subscribers by the end of the year. The expected upgrade will follow Airtel’s recent upgrade of its 3G network to 3.75G.
He also said that his company is open to working with regulators to ensure that the internet is used appropriately.
“We are not a regulator, so we cannot say how people use internet. But we are working closely with stakeholders to ensure that their fight on protecting children online and fighting radicalization in the country is tackled,” he said in conclusion.
