The striker has struggled for game time since moving to Old Trafford in 2010, featuring just 152 times in all competitions over four years, while he was handed just six starts last term under David Moyes.
Louis van Gaal has since been appointed as the new boss at United but despite this Herrera, who named Hernandez in his 23-man squad for next month’s World Cup, believes ‘Chicharito’ needs to cut ties with the Manchester side and seek greener pastures.
“In the case of Chicharito, I believe it’d be in his interest to leave so he is taken into consideration to play,” Herrera said.
Hernandez, though, admits he is unsure of where his future lies, telling Record: “There is obviously uncertainty [regarding my future], but right now I am fully focused on the national team.
“My agent and my staff help me work it all out.
“My future could be decided tomorrow, a little after or within three months. (I could) stay there (in Manchester), I really don’t know.”
