‘Amazing’ Messi is our Maradona

MESSI-BOLIVIA SAO PAULO, June 30- Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella Monday hailed Lionel Messi’s “amazing” World Cup form and compared him to Diego Maradona during the team’s title run in 1986.

Sabella said he never had any doubts that Messi, who has not always produced his best at international level, would star at the tournament.

The four-time world player of the year, aged 27, has hit four of Argentina’s six goals en route to Tuesday’s last 16 knock-out game against Switzerland in Sao Paulo.

“Messi’s playing an amazing World Cup, that’s what everybody expected,” Sabella told reporters at Corinthians Arena.

“I expected it, so did his colleagues and so did all Argentinians in general. So of course we’re happy, we’re happy for the team and for him as well.

“He’s an important player for us. Maradona was a very important player in that time and Messi is important as well.”

Messi scored against all of Argentina’s group rivals Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria to lie one off Maradona’s haul of five goals in 1986, when the Albiceleste last won the World Cup.

Sabella said he was happy for the two-time world champions to rely on their star man — much as Brazil have counted on Messi’s Barcelona team-mate, Neymar.

“I think both players are amazing. Messi’s the best in the world, Neymar is a great player and of course with players like this the team depends on them. It’s normal,” he said.

No FIFA action over Robben dive claims

ROBBEN-ALONSO RIO DE JANEIRO, June 30- Dutch star Arjen Robben will not face any disciplinary action after admitting to diving during his team’s last 16 victory with Mexico, FIFA confirmed on Monday.

Robben, who won a match-winning injury-time penalty to secure a 2-1 win for the Netherlands, admitted later he had dived in a failed attempt to win a spot-kick earlier in the match.

However FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer ruled out any possibility of retrospective actions when asked about Robben’s comments at a briefing on Monday.

Fischer said sanctioning after the fact only applied to “serious infringements of foul play which have escaped the notice of the match officials.”

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said earlier Monday that Robben’s post-match comments had been misinterpreted.

“Media have interpreted statements from Robben in a Dutch post match interview completely wrong,” the KNVB said.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Football Association hit back at reporting of comments by Arjen Robben on the penalties he claimed in the World Cup victory over Mexico.

The association, the KNVB, said Robben’s comments, in which he admitted diving to try and get a penalty in the first half, were interpreted “completely wrong”.

It added that Robben would make a statement later in the day.

“KNVB is unpleasantly suprised by publications in the media about the Dutch penalty in the match versus Mexico,” read a statement.

“Media have interpreted statements from Robben in a Dutch post match interview completely wrong,” it added.

The 30-year-old Bayern Munich star won a penalty injury time that was converted by Jan-Klaas Huntelaar to win the match 2-1.

Brazil official suspended for ‘punching’

MAURICIO-PINILLA RIO DE JANEIRO, June 30- Brazil’s press chief Rodrigo Paiva has been suspended for one game following allegations he punched Chilean player Mauricio Pinilla during the World Cup last 16 game between the two countries, FIFA said Monday.

Paiva was issued with a red card following the incident and will not be able to take any part in Brazil’s quarter-final against Colombia on Friday, FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer confirmed.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee was also investigating the incident, meaning Paiva could face further sanctions.

The fracas happened at half-time in Saturday’s match, which Brazil won on penalties.

Chile’s media spokesman Maria Jose said his Brazilian counterpart “hit” Pinilla.

Paiva told Brazilian media there was shoving by both sides as the two teams left the field.

“I was not the only one involved. Pinilla came looking for me and I just defended myself,” he was quoted as saying.

“I just pushed him,” he added.

“They started to insult us, there was some shoving but no assault,” Paiva said.

Uruguay president: FIFA ‘sons of bitches’

SUAREZ-CHIELLINI MONTEVIDEO, June 30- Uruguay’s President Jose Mujica has slammed FIFA leaders as “sons of bitches” for banning the country’s star striker Luis Suarez over his infamous World Cup bite.

Mujica called the four-month ban on all football activity imposed on Suarez for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini “fascist sanctions”.

The president made the comments to a state-run TV sports show which asked Mujica his opinion of the World Cup as he welcomed the defeated Uruguayans on their return from Brazil late Sunday.

“Those at FIFA are a gang of old sons of bitches,” Mujica said. He gasped and put his hand to his mouth in an I-can’t-believe-that-I said-that manner, but smiled.

The journalist asked if he could publish the remark.

“For my part, sure,” Mujica shrugged.

“I support the president’s remarks,” added his wife, Senator Lucia Topolansky, who was standing next to him.

“They could have sanctioned him,” said Mujica, a 79-year-old ex-guerrilla, “but not with fascist sanctions.”

Suarez bit Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy to secure a place in the last 16. It was his third offence for biting an opponent.

FIFA slapped Suarez with a four-month ban on all football activities, a nine-match international suspension and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000, 83,000 euros).

Without Suarez, Uruguay lost 2-0 to Colombia on Saturday.

The Suarez sanctions have been harshly criticized in Uruguay. Mujica welcomed Suarez at Montevideo airport when he arrived Friday ahead of the team.

In his weekly radio address on Friday, Mujica said the Suarez punishment would be “an eternal shame” in the history of the World Cup.

At home, the opposition backed Mujica’s position — but questioned his choice of words.

“We disagree with FIFA. It has acted in a fascist way, and imposed sanctions without respecting human rights. But a president cannot offer such insults,” National Party senator and former foreign minister Sergio Abreu said on Twitter.

Another opposition senator, Ope Pasquet of the Colorado Party, said: “Another quality contribution to the public debate from the president.”

Greek players turn down bonus

GREECE-COSTA-RICA ATHENS, June 30 – Greece’s World Cup players have turned down their World Cup bonus and called for the money to be used to build a national training centre in the cash-strapped country, reports said Monday.

The team, beaten by Costa Rica on penalties on Sunday, wrote to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras saying they did not want the promised bonus.

“We do not want the extra bonus. We only play for Greece and its people,” their letter was quoted as saying.

“But we ask you to support our effort to find a land plot in order to create the training center that will house our National team.”

The reports said the prime minister vowed to help the team carry out its wish in a telephone call to the head of the Greek federation.

OKIYA OMTATAH Now Dumps RAILA Calling Him STUPID And States How SABA SABA Will Be A MAJOR FLOP Uhuru Will Still Be The PRESIDENT

The activists cum politician whom unsuccessfully vied for Nairobi senatorial seat in the last general elections under the CORD umbrella has now turned his weapons against Raila calling him stupid And stipulating how Saba Saba will be a major failure.

Here's his statement:

The much hyped Saba Saba champagne revolution will be just that - a champagne revolution that will begin with Ex-premier Raila Amolo Odinga leaving his leafy Karen home to ride past Deputy President William Samoei Ruto's palatial Karen residence, to harangue the scam of earth with non-issues, in a filthy and dirt choked Nairobi city, overlooked by President Uhuru Kenyatta's imposing and majestic State House residence on the hill.

The revolution will end with a well fed but crestfallen Ex-premier Raila Amolo Odinga returning to the safety of his Karen home, having addressed the hungry crowds but having been unable to feed them on 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish as the Good Shepherd fed His crowds in Galilee some 735,000 days ago.

Hence, the 10-day ultimatum Ex-premier Raila Amolo Odinga gave President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta yesterday (June 27, 2014), demanding national dialogue or the ogre of Saba Saba will be loosed upon the nation, must be understood in the context of a man who took a bad joke, that he could blow a whistle to start a revolution, a bit too far - to the extremely foolish point of threatening to overthrow the Constitution by declaring Saba Saba a public holiday.

However, now, that reality has hit him square in the face that the Kenyan State is not a mushroom which he can whimsically and clownishly just pick up, cook, and serve to history on Saba Saba day, he is desperate to avoid his Waterloo event. By whatever means necessary, he must call up shamans to change the course of history and avoid imminent self-annihilation.

The President should let Ex-premier Raila Amolo Odinga cook his goose on Saba Saba Day. Let Saba Saba happen - and on the morning after, as the sun rises on the unchanged Republic, let it be a lesson to all those scarecrows out there, who are bent on wasting the people by seeking to hold the nation hostage.

Ex-premier Raila Amolo Odinga's aim is to re-assert himself in Cord and take back control in ODM. But that should not be done at the expense of the nation and its nascent institutions. We must spare no effort in implementing the Constitution. But if Cord thinks that we must operate outside our institutions of representative democracy, then let all their elected members resign and, then, we go for direct democracy through national dialogue mechanisms like constituent assemblies.

There is absolutely no questioning the fact that the Kikuyu and Kalejin Mafia in power (read, Jubilee Government) mean no good for the common man. Their agenda is to loot national coffers like never before, and pass policies and implement programmes geared towards creating a Kikiyu-Kalenjin hegemony which is anathema to the Republic of Kenya.

It is heart-rending that on the other hand, there is absolutely nothing different on offer from the Luo-Kamba-Luhyia Mafia seeking state power (read, the Cord opposition). They have no agenda for the common man. They seek their chance to loot the national coffers like never before, and pass policies and implement programmes geared towards creating a Luo-Kamba-Luhyia hegemony which is anathema to the Republic of Kenya.

The Republic cannot survive for long under the superintendence of the fraudulent and unpatriotic looting formations which falsely style themselves as the Jubilee and Cord political formations. The two - Jubilee and Cord - are the legs upon which the plague consuming the Republic stands and walks.

Just for a start, look at the top ten leaders in each looting formation, and tell me if they are not thieves themselves or sons of thieves who have laid bare the coffers of the Republic! Hence, why are we ordinary people fighting killing ourselves over these two formations? Or is it that you are better off being eaten by a hyena from your region because they will defecate your remains back home, and that way you will rest in peace with your ancestors?

The offending tweet featured an airport “Departures” sign and an infographic of a sombrero, moustache and serape shawl.

“Planning your exit out of South American soon, slave traders,” said another angry Twitter user of the picture.

“Such a Dutch tweet – just the wrong side of funny vs arrogant,” tweeted another with the hashtag #mexicogate.

Other reactions were more mitigated. “It isn’t right but most films show Mexicans that way, why is saying it any worse,” read one.

In response, national carrier AeroMexico tweeted a photo of an “Arrivals” sign with the message: “We’re proud and await you at home.”

Meanwhile, 45,000 people dressed in the national orange packed an Amsterdam square to watch the game and erupted with joy after the victory.

“It was an amazing game,” said Iris, 22, sporting an orange T-shirt and face paint on the Museumplein square where the match was being shown on giant television screens.

“There was a really bad atmosphere at the start of the match, we were afraid, but it turned into a great party in the final minutes,” she told AFP.

The huge crowd was morose in the first half after Mexico took the lead, but the beer-fuelled party picked up after the Netherlands finally scored.

Bosh joins Wade, James in free agency

WADE-JAMES-BOSH MIAMI, June 30 – All-Star center Chris Bosh informed the Miami Heat on Sunday that he will exercise an early termination clause in his contract, following teammates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade into free agency.

Bosh’s expected decision comes five days after James declined his player option, with Wade following suit on Saturday, when forward Udonis Haslem also elected to become a free agent.

While the move gives other NBA teams a tantalizing chance to try to woo Miami’s stars, it also gives the Heat a massive $55 million in salary cap space going into the free agent signing period that begins July 1.

That might let the Heat add another established name, and still re-sign James, Wade and Bosh.

Both Wade and Bosh have publicly said they are open to taking a pay cut in order to keep James while bolstering the team.

The Heat have reached the NBA Finals in all four seasons since Bosh and James both joined the team as free agents in the summer of 2010.

After falling to Dallas in the subsequent season, the Heat captured back-to-back titles before falling in five games to the San Antonio Spurs in this season’s championship finals.

Bosh again played a major part in the latest run, averaging 16.2 points and 6.6 rebounds over 79 regular-season games.

“Chris is one of the most versatile and dynamic big men in this league, and he has been an instrumental key to our championship success over the last four seasons,” Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement.

“We look forward to meeting with Chris and his agent in the coming days to discuss keeping him in Miami for many years to come.”

Halilhodzic slams Ramadan questions

VAHID-HALIHODZIC PORTO ALEGRE, June 30 – Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic on Sunday turned on reporters repeatedly asking whether his players are observing Ramadan on the eve of their World Cup clash with Germany.

Germany take on the Algerians in Porto Alegre on Monday in their last 16 clash, but repeated questions about the Muslim month of fasting drew the coach’s wrath.

“Stop asking me about Ramadan or I will get up and leave,” fumed the Bosnia-born Halilhodzic as Ramadan started on Saturday.

“When you ask the question, you lack respect and I’d like you to focus on the football and nothing else.

“This is not the first time I coach a team with Muslims, I’m a Muslim myself.

“I have always allowed the players to make their own decision.”

The 61-year-old is riled by criticism from the Algerian press who alleged he had advised his players not to follow Ramadan.

“Unfortunately, I have read some newspapers, and one in particular, who continue to tarnish my image and question my honour and integrity,” he fumed.

“They have called for hatred and aggression against Vahid and his entourage, that’s disgusting!”

The clash at Porto Alegre’s Beira-Rio Stadium has drawn plenty of questions about the ‘Shame of Gijon’ which remains a sore point in Algeria, three decades later.

Despite beating West Germany 2-1 in their group games, Algeria was eliminated from the 1982 World Cup after the Germans played out a mutually beneficial 1-0 win over Austria in Gijon.

“No one has forgotten what happened in 1982, the players will be motivated to get their revenge, but the Germans will also be doing everything to get to the quarter-finals,” said Halilhodzic.

A 1-1 draw against Russia in the group stages put Algeria in the knock-out phase and Halilhodzic said his side are dreaming of a place in Friday’s quarter-final against either France or Nigeria in Rio de Janeiro.

“We had a lot to lose against Russia, but we have nothing to lose against the Germans,” said Halilhodzic.

“We are living through good times and we want them to continue, we want to go to Rio to at least visit the Copacabana — that would be nice.

“The Germans are really impressive, they finish very well and are very fit.

“I have talked to the players and tried to get the underdogs feeling out of them.

“We’ll prepare for this as if it is the most important match in our careers.

“We will give it our upmost, but we will try and leave this wonderful tournament as well as possible.”

Dogged Costa Rica shoot to history

NAVAS-GREECE RECIFE, June 30- Bryan Ruiz calmly guided 10-man Costa Rica through a tense penalty decider against Greece on Sunday and into the World Cup quarter finals for the first time in the country’s history.

The Ticos’ captain scored the goal that put Costa Rica ahead and also put away his penalty as the Central Americans kept their nerve to win the decider 5-3.

The two sides were 1-1 after regulation time with Sokratis Papastathopoulos cancelling out Ruiz’s goal in injury time to force extra time which also ended in deadlock.

Fanis Gekas missed Greece’s fourth penalty and Michael Umana converted Costa Rica’s fifth to seal the historic victory.

Costa Rica looked on target to pick off a new European scalp when in the 52nd minute Christian Bolanos found Ruiz on the edge of the penalty area and the skipper turned the ball into the net.

The shot by Ruiz, whose headed goal sank Italy in the key Group D clash, was not powerful. But Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and his defence seemed to stand still and watch it go by.

The goal brought Greece out of their shells and the pressure began to tell on the Costa Ricans. Oscar Duarte brought down Jose Holebas in the 62nd minute and his second yellow card meant his immediate expulsion.

Greece poured forward but still Costa Rica held on and believed the game was theirs when Papastathopoulos struck in the second minute of injury time.

Gekas fired in a low shot which Keylor Navas could not hold and the Borussia Dortmund defender hit in an easy rebound.

Robben sorry for dive

ROBBEN-DIVE FORTALEZA, June 29- Dutch striker Arjen Robben on Sunday apologized for diving in a bid to get a penalty against Mexico but insisted he did not fake the foul that led to his side’s winning penalty kick.

Mexico’s coach Miguel Herrera launched a furious attack on match referee Pedro Proenca for giving the injury time penalty that Jan-Klaas Huntelaar hit home to seal a 2-1 comeback victory.

Robben was at the centre of both incidents in the World Cup last-16 clash in Fortaleza.

“I really have to say and at the same time apologise in the first half I took a dive and I really shouldn’t do that,” Robben told Dutch broadcaster NOS as he celebrated the victory.

“That was a stupid, stupid thing to do but sometimes you’re expecting to be struck and then they pull their leg away at the last minute.”

But the Dutch striker insisted Proenca was right to point to the penalty spot after he was challenged by Mexico’s veteran captain Rafael Marquez. “I was fouled,” he said.

Mexico had been leading until the 88th minute when Wesley Sneijder scored and then Huntelaar put away the penalty.

And Herrera said referee Proenca should take no more part in the World Cup.

“The determining factor was the man with the whistle. He put us of the World Cup,” he said.

“Although the first goal was down to our mistake, we had the chance to reconsider during the break before extra time, but at the end when the referee invents a penalty you go out of the World Cup.

“At the very least they can look at this and this gentleman ought to be going home like us.”

Herrera claimed his side had been the victim of poor refereeing in three of their four games in Brazil and a European referee should never have been allocated the game in the first place.

“Out of four matches, we had three where the referee was disastrous.

“I don’t understand why they had someone from the same confederation. Why not an African, Asian or South American referee? All the doubtful decisions went against Mexico.”

Giovani dos Santos’ strike early in the second-half appeared to have Mexico on course for their first quarter-final appearance at a World Cup on foreign soil.

The Dutch goals stunned the Mexicans however and Herrera admitted his side had lacked experience in how to see the game out.

“Maybe we were missing what teams like Argentina, Uruguay and those with experience of winning do.

“We had four minutes to go plus stoppage time and we should have put the ball in the corner, do what other teams do and perhaps we would have been faced with a different result.”

Dutch boss Louis van Gaal admitted that cooling breaks offered to the players for the first time in a World Cup match after half an hour of each half allowed him to have a greater influence on the game.

“It is true it helps having these breaks because first I had switched to 4-3-3 and we created a lot opportunities, (Guillermo) Ochoa had one great save in particular.

“After that I moved to plan B and I did that in the cooling break. That is a clever way of benefiting from these breaks.”

The Manchester United manager was vindicated in his substitutions as he surprisingly replaced captain Robin van Persie whilst in need of a goal to bring on Huntelaar.

And van Gaal insisted he was not afraid to remove his star players for the benefit of the team.

“Van Persie’s change was a tactical substitution and you have to remember that before the World Cup he was just recovering from an injury so it is difficult for him to keep going.

“I am a coach that wants to win so when I have to I will substitute players.”

Gyan apologises for Black Stars failure

GYAN-GERMANY ACCRA, June 29- Ghana’s captain Asamoah Gyan apologised on Sunday for the Black Stars’s World Cup collapse which saw them finish bottom of their group amid money disputes in the squad.

“We went there to make sure we make the nation proud, and then things didn’t happen,” Gyan said before a handful of supporters at the airport in the capital Accra. “What I have to say is sorry to all the fans who were very disappointed in us.”

Coach Kwesi Appiah expressed similar sentiments.

“It’s really unfortunate, I know Ghanaians love football and would have loved to get much, much further,” Appiah said. “I’m very sorry I could not achieve what Ghanaians expected the team to.”

Ghana lost its opening Group G match to the United States 2-1 and tied Germany 2-2 in its second match.

Controversy off-the-pitch then further undermined the World Cup effort.

Players demanded that more than $3 million in bonuses be flown to them in Brazil, an embarrassingly public expenditure for Ghana’s cash-strapped government.

Before the team’s final match against Portugal, the Ghana Football Association kicked key players midfielder Sulley Muntari and striker Kevin-Prince Boateng out of the squad.

The GFA alleged Muntari assaulted a staff member and Boateng insulted Appiah.

Ghana went on to lose to Portugal 2-1.

The team’s preparations were also tainted by allegations by Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper that a Ghana Football Association official had agreed for the national team to play in a game organized by match-fixers.

Ghana went on to lose to Portugal 2-1.

Gyan’s goal against Portugal in the final game made him the top-scoring African footballer in World Cup history, which the capable striker called “a great achievement.”

When asked if his apology extended to the drama in the team’s camp, Gyan said it covered “everything.”

“At the end of the day, we didn’t qualify, so whatever happens on and off the field, we are the people to be blamed,” he said.

Double Dutch late show floors Mexico

HUNTELAAR-MEXICO FORTALEZA, June 29- The Netherlands scored twice in the dying minutes through Wesley Sneijder and a Klaas Jan Huntelaar penalty to move into the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Mexico on Sunday.

In a match conditioned by the baking heat and humidity in Fortaleza, Giovani dos Santos looked to have Mexico on the way to their first quarter-final appearance on foreign soil when he opened the scoring three minutes into the second-half.

However, Sneijder levelled with a thumping volley from the edge of the area two minutes from time before Huntelaar converted from the spot in stoppage time after Rafael Marquez had upended Arjen Robben.

Louis van Gaal’s men will now face Costa Rica or Greece in the last eight in Salvador on Saturday.

The Netherlands had been disrupted by an early injury to Nigel de Jong as he hobbled off to be replaced by Bruno Martins Indi.

Mexico’s Hector Herrera then had the clearest opening of the first 45 minutes as he collected Oribe Peralta’s pass on the edge of the area and cut inside before dragging a right-foot shot inches wide.

Dutch keeper Jasper Cillessen was then forced into his first save of the afternoon by a long-range effort from Carlos Salcido.

The Netherlands didn’t register an effort on target until the 26th minute when Robin van Persie skewed wide form a narrow angle after collecting Stefan de Vrij’s pass inside the area.

Both sides were then handed the chance to cool off for three minutes at the half-hour mark for the first time at a World Cup due to the searing temperatures.

Cillessen then made a fine stop to prevent dos Santos opening the scoring with a low effort.

However, the Netherlands were left aggrieved just a minute before the break when Robben appeared to have been clipped by Hector Moreno inside the area.

Mexico got off to a flying start in the second-half as Dos Santos held off a challenge from Daley Blind to thump home his first international goal in a competitive match for two years from 25 yards.

Oribe Peralta nearly made it 2-0 eight minutes later with a curling effort that Cillessen did well to claim at the first attempt.

Moments later it was Guillermo Ochoa who made an incredible stop to prevent Stefan de Vrij levelling as he turned the defender’s volley onto the post from point-blank range.

Sneijder then saw a deflected effort fly inches past as the Netherlands went in search of an equaliser.

Ochoa had to come to his side’s rescue again 17 minutes from time when Robben escaped the clutches of Marquez but saw his low effort turned behind by the Mexican stopper.

Dutch boss Louis van Gaal then surprisingly replaced captain Van Persie with Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

However, his decision was to prove inspired as firstly Huntelaar turned Robben’s corner in the direction of the lurking Sneijder to power home from the edge of the box on.

And after Robben was adjudged by Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca to have been clipped by Marquez in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the Schalke striker coolly stroked home the resulting penalty to eliminate Mexico at the last 16 stage for a sixth consecutive World Cup.

Rio asks Liverpool to sell Suarez

RIOSMILES London, June 29- Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has suggested Liverpool should consider putting star-player Luis Suarez up for sale.

Uruguay striker Suarez is serving a FIFA four-month ban after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a group match at the World Cup in Brazil.

He will sit out a further nine games through suspension which affects the Reds, who are set for a more demanding campaign with UEFA Champions League football.

In his column for the Mail Online, Ferdinand believes the Merseysiders should target Alexis Sanchez as part of a deal with Barcelona, who have shown interested in Suarez.

“If I were the chief executive or the money man at Liverpool, I’d have him up for sale already,” the 35-year-old centre-back wrote.

“The issue is one of risk and what might happen in the future given a pattern of behaviour. Keeping Suarez may potentially cost Liverpool tens of millions of pounds. Perhaps 70-million or more.

“How so? If he went somewhere else this summer – Spain, I guess, with Barcelona and Real Madrid showing recent interest and having the money – Liverpool cash in on their biggest asset.

“Yes, it will be a tough ask to replace such quality, but if all the proceeds and more were re-invested in a proven striker, it might make sense.”

Ferdinand added: “If Liverpool don’t sell him and he bites someone else after his ban ends, he could be thrown out for years. The solution to the Suarez situation could be that if Barca do want him, I’d demand Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal.

“If I were the Liverpool manager there wouldn’t be a moment’s doubt about what to do next with Luis Suarez. I’d keep him.

“Leave aside, just for a moment, questions of morality or whether his ban is long enough and what is going on is his head to make him do these extraordinarily bad things.

“Purely and simply from a football perspective, what he does for you on the pitch – and I don’t mean biting people – makes him indispensable.

“And with the season Liverpool have ahead of them, that’s truer than ever. So that’s the football decision. It’s an easy one to make.”

Uruguay coach: Rodriguez ‘like Maradona’

RODRIGUEZ-JAPAN RIO DE JANEIRO, June 29- Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez likened James Rodriguez to Diego Maradona after his sublime volley inspired Colombia to a 2-0 victory in the World Cup last 16 on Saturday.

“For me, special talents are those who do things that are completely out of the ordinary,” said Tabarez, whose side were beaten by two Rodriguez goals at the Maracana stadium.

“Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, James Rodriguez — they do things because they have certain gifts that make them special.”

Rodriguez, 22, opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a sensational goal, chesting the ball down and hammering a volley in off the crossbar from 25 yards.

He doubled his tally early in the second half, sweeping home Juan Cuadrado’s knock-down to move to the top of the Golden Boot standings with five goals.

“I believe he’s the best player at the World Cup,” Tabarez added. “I don’t think I’m exaggerating. He’s a young player. We tried to limit his influence, but he kept going and made his presence felt.

“Hopefully he’ll continue to progress, because he’s very young. Football needs players with these characteristics.”

Colombia’s victory means that they will face hosts Brazil in the quarter-finals in Fortaleza on July 4.

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman, who led an Argentina side containing Messi to the quarter-finals in 2006, said that Rodriguez was a player with rare and unusual gifts.

“In my long experience in football, I’ve had extraordinary footballer players in my teams, elite players of a very high technical level,” said the Argentine.

“I placed James in the centre of everything, because I saw the extraordinary ability that he had.

“What’s most surprising is that at his young age, he doesn’t have any problem taking responsibility for doing things that some footballers take many years to understand.

“He’s a technical player who has everything to be a top player at a world level, both in terms of helping his team-mates to play and in taking the time to evaluate situations to see what needs to be done as a team.

“I have great praise for what he’s doing. I never had any doubts that this would be his World Cup.”

Rodriguez, who joined Monaco from Porto last year in a 45-million-euro ($61 million) deal, said that he was delighted to have helped guide Colombia to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

“We’re very happy, because we’re making history,” he said.

“When I was younger, I always wanted to be here. It was a big dream of mine, and we hope we can make it bigger. This is a team that really wants to win.”

Brazil, Chile smashes Twitter record

CESAR-SAVE PARIS, June 29- A record 16.3 million tweets were sent during Saturday’s World Cup game between Brazil and Chile, the most ever for a live event on the social network.

The game saw the World Cup hosts go through to the quarter finals after a nail-biting encounter that went to extra time, with Brazil finally winning 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out.

The final moments of the match — which saw Chile miss their final penalty — generated 388,985 tweets a minute, Twitter told AFP.

This broke a record previously set during the Super Bowl, when 382,000 tweets were sent per minute.

Unsurprisingly, Brazilian striker Neymar, who scored the team’s final penalty, was the player mentioned most frequently on the site during the game.

Twitter said on Friday that more than 300 million messages had been sent about the tournament since the group stages of the football competition began, with the event “already becoming one of the most talked about events on Twitter of all time”.

Before Saturday, the record for the most-commented-on match on the network was that between Brazil and Croatia on June 12, which saw 12.2 million messages sent.

Podolski out, Loew goes silent mode

PODOLSKI-USA PORTO ALEGRE, June 29- Germany forward Lukas Podolski has been ruled out of Monday’s World Cup last 16 clash against Algeria in Porto Alegre with a thigh injury.

The 29-year-old Arsenal star — who is at his third World Cup finals — suffered the injury in Germany’s 1-0 win over the USA on Thursday in their final group stage match and an MRI scan on Saturday revealed a small tear.

“Lukas must rest for two or three days, but should we progress in the tournament it won’t be a problem for him to play,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew.

With Podolski out, Bayern Munich’s Mario Goetze is set to take his place on the left wing.

Germany’s right-back Jerome Boateng also missed training on Saturday with a knee irritation, but Loew said it will be “no problem” for the Bayern Munich defender to play.

Meanwhile, a mobile phone malfunction means Germany coach Joachim Loew is hard to reach at the World Cup ahead of his team’s last 16 clash against Algeria on Monday.

The 54-year-old has had a tough time with electronics at Germany’s Santo Andre World Cup base having lost all of his favourite music when he accidentally dropped his ipod during a run on the beach.

Now a fault with his mobile telephone is keeping Germany’s head coach on silent mode ahead of their last 16 match at Porto Alegre’s Beira-Rio Stadium.

“I can’t telephone or receive SMS messages, I have no idea where the problem lies,” he admitted.

But with his full attention on Germany’s bid to win a fourth World Cup title, Loew adopted a typically laid-back Brazilian attitude to the problem.

Brazilian fan dies, Colombia woman murdered

BRAZIL-FAN BELO HORIZONTE, June 29 – A 69-year-old Brazilian fan died of heart failure while watching his country’s World Cup penalty shootout win over Chile, media reported Saturday.

The man was watching the tense encounter, which Brazil won on spotkicks after the sides were locked 1-1 after extra-time, in a nearby bar when he complained of feeling unwell.

The fan, who was diabetic, died shortly after being taken to hospital, web news portal G1 and the website of Estado de Minas newspaper reported.

The paper added local health officials had to treat some 100 people during the game, including a 50-year-old woman for a heart problem during the penalties and a young man whose nose was fractured in a fight.

Meanwhile, Officials said a 25-year-old woman was murdered Saturday in Bogota following Colombia’s World Cup win over Uruguay in what they initially said was an accident caused by a stray bullet fired in celebration.

After the game authorities said that someone celebrated by firing into the air, and that the bullet accidentally killed a woman in the Bogota neighborhood of Bosa.

But upon investigation, police determined that a gunman had targeted the woman, acting Bogota mayor Ricardo Bonilla said in a press conference.

“A hitman on a motorcycle opened fire on three people,” Bonilla said, killing one of them.

He described it as “the only deadly case” in the post-game celebrations.

However five people were injured after the game and 274 fights broke out, Bonilla said, citing preliminary figures.

Police said that national figures on game-related accidents and violence will be released on Sunday.

When Colombia beat Greece on June 14 police reported nine people dead, 150 vehicle accidents, and 3,000 fights. This happened despite Colombia’s ban on alcohol sales and increased policing during the matches.

In the next game, Colombia — which has not classified for a World Cup tournament in 16 years and reaches the quarter finals for the first time — will face powerhouse Brazil on July 4.

Costa Ricans pass doping tests

COSTA-RICA-ENGLAND RECIFE, June 29 – Costa Rica’s players who had drug tests after two World Cup games all produced negative results, their federation said Saturday.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona joined the Costa Rican federation in hitting oput at world governing body FIFA when seven players were subjected to doping controls following their 1-0 win over Italy.

“FIFA’s medical service told us Saturday that the anti-doping controls performed on the Costa Rican players after matches seven and 24 did not give positive results,” said a federation statement.

The two matches were Costa Rica’s 3-1 win over Uruguay and the success against Italy.

Meanwhile, Police in Brazil fired tear gas to break up hundreds of protesters outside Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, where Colombia and Uruguay were playing a World Cup knock-out-stage match.

About 350 anti-World Cup protesters marched toward the Maracana closely guarded by about 250 police, who fired tear gas to disperse them just as they came within sight of the stadium.

An AFP correspondent saw police detain at least three demonstrators and frog march them away from the crowd.

Mass protests erupted just over a year ago in Brazil, at first drawing hundreds of thousands of people into the streets to condemn the record $11 billion spent on the World Cup and shoddy schools, hospitals and public transport.

But recent demonstrations have been far smaller, with many Brazilians more interested in football or frightened by the violent tactics of hardcore protesters such as the anarchist Black Bloc movement.

Police charged a group of protesters wearing the Black Bloc’s trademark black masks Saturday, breaking the demonstration into several smaller groups.

Rodriguez rocket propels Colombia

RODRIGUEZ-URUGUAY RIO DE JANEIRO, June 28- James Rodriguez knocked Luis Suarez out of the headlines with an exquisite goal as Colombia beat Uruguay 2-0 on Saturday to set up a World Cup quarter-final against hosts Brazil.

The pre-match build-up had been dominated by talk of Suarez’s four-month ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, but by the final whistle at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana, there was only one name on everyone’s lips.

Having previously illuminated the group phase, Rodriguez broke the deadlock shortly before the half hour with a breath-taking strike, chesting the ball down and volleying home from 25 yards.

The 22-year-old Monaco playmaker added a second early in the second half, sending him to the top of the scorers chart with five goals and confirming his emergence as one of the players of the tournament.

His goals took Colombia into the quarter-finals for the first time, meaning the northern Brazilian city of Fortaleza will turn completely yellow when Jose Pekerman’s side play the hosts on July 4.

Uruguay’s fans sported Suarez masks and brandished banners in support of their wayward star, who flew home to Montevideo on Friday, while his shirt was hung up in the Uruguay changing room.

But they were to endure a night of disappointment on their return to the Maracana, scene of the country’s seismic 2-1 win over Brazil in the deciding game of the 1950 World Cup.

Diego Forlan replaced Suarez for Uruguay, while Colombia coach Pekerman sprang a surprise by selecting two centre-forwards in Jackson Martinez and Teofilo Gutierrez.

Although Martinez lined up on the left flank, there was no lack of ambition to Colombia’s play.

Juan Cuadrado and Juan Zuniga set the tone with purposeful early runs at the Uruguay defence, with one of the latter’s raids culminating in a low shot that Fernando Muslera gathered at the second attempt.

- Jaw-dropping splendour -

Uruguay were content to cede possession to their opponents, sitting deep on the edge of their own box, but their defences were breached in the 28th minute by a goal of jaw-dropping splendour.

After Abel Aguilar saw a chipped pass cleared back to him, he headed the ball up to Rodriguez, who was standing just outside the penalty area.

The Colombia number 10 controlled the ball on his chest, turned, and unleashed a magnificent dipping volley that crashed in off the crossbar.

Rodriguez, who has now scored in each of his last six international games, celebrated with appropriate abandon, screaming ‘Vamos!’ at the hordes of jubilant yellow-shirted fans in the front-row seats.

Uruguay set about trying to wipe out the deficit, but Edinson Cavani’s free-kick narrowly cleared the bar and Alvaro Gonzalez was foiled by a full-length parry from Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina.

Colombia doubled their lead five minutes into the second half with a fine team goal.

Pablo Armero’s deep left-wing cross was headed down by Cuadrado and Rodriguez swept home his second of the night from close range.

Ospina kept Uruguay at bay thereafter, parrying shots from Gonzalez, Cristian Rodriguez and Cavani and saving bravely from Maxi Pereira.

Uruguay’s frustration began to tell, with substitute Gaston Ramirez booked for a wild kick at Armero.

Four years after reaching the semi-finals in South Africa, Uruguay’s World Cup ended at the scene of their greatest triumph.

Van Gaal: Water breaks for Mexico clash

VAN-GAAL-UNITED FORTALEZA, June 29- Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal wants Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca to allow water breaks during his side’s World Cup last 16 encounter with Mexico in Fortaleza on Sunday.

Temperatures for the 1pm kick off local time (1600GMT) are expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius with intense humidity also likely to drain players on both sides.

“We hope that we get breaks to drink, otherwise we will put bottles around the pitch for the players,” said Van Gaal, who will take over at Manchester United after the finals.

“Dehydration is an element we have looked at in our training. Every people is different, but some can lose up to four kilos during the match, so you have to keep them hydrated as much as possible.

“We hope that the referee will referee in a sensible way.”

And Van Gaal admitted that the heat and humidity would be an advantage for the Mexicans at a World Cup where teams from central and south American sides have generally outperformed their European counterparts.

“That is the reason we tried to get the players as fit as possible. I am quite conscious that it will also affect the Mexican team, but they are much more used to it.”

The Netherlands did, though, score one of Europe’s few victories over south American opposition with a 2-0 win against Chile in their final Group B game to ensure they won the group with a 100 percent record.

And he is expecting a similar test against Mexico, although he acknowledged El Tri lack the individual star power of the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal.

“I think Mexico is comparable to Chile. The difference with Chile is that we could have been faced with two fantastic players. (Arturo) Vidal didn’t play so that was obviously a big advantage for us.

“But I think Mexico as an entire team is a better team. I believe that they play according to their qualities, their skills and they have great determination to win. For me Mexico is the most determined team we’ve faced.”

Dutch captain Robin van Persie will come back into the side having missed the win over Chile due to suspension.

Van Gaal confirmed that everyone bar Leroy Fer is fit after the Norwich City midfielder strained a hamstring in training on Tuesday.

However, he insisted that defender Bruno Martins Indi is unlikely to start as he has only just returned to training after suffering a concussion in the 3-2 win over Australia last week, so former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt is expected to start in an unfamiliar role at left-back as he did against Chile.

Van Gaal’s men’s preparations for the game were also disrupted as both the Netherlands and Mexico were not able to train on the pitch at the Estadio Castelao on the eve of the match due to the bad state of the pitch.

“It is a shame but I do understand the decision from FIFA because the pitch is the most important material for a footballer,” added Van Gaal.

“I just checked and the pitch is not that good.”

“We got lucky,” Scolari admits

SCOLARI-RUSSIA BELO HORIZONTE, June 28- Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari accepted that luck was on his team’s side after they scraped into the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday by beating Chile on penalties.

“If you don’t exploit the few opportunities you get, you can go out. We almost paid the price in the 118th minute when the ball hit the bar,” said Scolari, whose side triumphed 3-2 in a shoot-out at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes and extra time.

Brazil squandered several chances, converting just one of 13 attempts on target due to poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Chile’s Claudio Bravo.

And they survived when Chile substitute Mauricio Pinilla crashed a shot off the woodwork with penalties approaching.

In the shoot-out, Willian and Hulk both missed for the tournament hosts but goalkeeper Julio Cesar made two crucial saves from Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez before Gonzalo Jara hit the post when he had to score to keep Chile in it.

“We had three or four chances to score a (second) goal and didn’t do it. We had even possession and more shots on goal, but when you don’t score you always run more of a risk,” Scolari said before praising his side for coping with the extreme pressure.

“This is a new team and even the most experienced players feel pressure. If you say you don’t, you are lying.

“Willian took a penalty and missed it but he will gain experience from it. Now let’s see if we can make less mistakes in the next matches, because if we make errors we will give away chances and might not be so lucky.

“Chile were brilliant. They are a well-organised team and it was a very balanced game,” he said.

Brazil may have the woodwork to thank for two crucial interventions in the game, but goalkeeper Julio Cesar played a huge role.

He broke down in tears just before starring in the shoot-out, and was also outstanding during the game itself, notably denying Charles Aranguiz in the second half with the score 1-1.

- Julio Cesar from villain to hero -

“The Brazilian people needed this, and so did the players. We knew how difficult it would be,” said the 34-year-old after collecting the man-of-the-match award.

“I hope that our coming matches don’t go to penalties, because otherwise our families will end up having heart problems.”

Questions were asked about Scolari’s decision to make the goalkeeper, now playing Major League Soccer for Toronto FC, his first choice at this World Cup.

However, Cesar hopes that his display against Chile will end the doubts.

“I prepared well physically and psychologically for this. It was difficult to come out of the 2010 World Cup labelled as a villain but I have always had the support of the players and supporters,” said Cesar, who was partially blamed for Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals in South Africa.

“I never hid that I am an emotional person. This match proves that if you have a dream you must chase it.”

Brazil will return to training on Monday as their attentions turn to a quarter-final tie against Colombia in Fortaleza on Friday.

And Scolari will hope that his battered and bruised players, above all Neymar, recover in time.

“Neymar hurt his thigh right at the start of the game from a heavy challenge (by Aranguiz in the fourth minute). We need to evaluate it but we should have three, four or five days to try and make sure he can play the next game.

“We will need to recover and learn from what happened here to improve in the next game. The emotion generated by winning, this could help us,” he said.

Wade joins James on free agent market

WADE-FINED MIAMI, June 29- Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade will join LeBron James on the NBA free agent market after informing the team on Saturday that he’ll opt out of his contract.

Heat President Pat Riley expressed optimism that the team would be able to retain the services of seven-time All-Star Wade, as well as keeping 11-year Heat veteran Udonis Haslem, who elected not to exercise his player option to stay with the team and also becomes a free agent.

“Today we were notified of Dwyane’s intention to opt-out of his contract and Udonis’ intention to not opt into his contract, making both players free agents,” Riley said in a statement.

“Dwyane has been the cornerstone of our organization for over a decade, and we hope he remains a part of the Heat family for life.

“Udonis has been the heartbeat of this team for 11 years. He has sacrificed countless times to make this organization successful, and he is the epitome of what this organization stands for. We look forward to meeting with Dwyane and Udonis and their agent in the coming days to discuss our future together.”

Wade is opting out of two years and $41.8 million left on his contract. US media reported that Chris Bosh, the third unit with James and Wade of Miami’s “Big Three” trio of stars, would also opt out of the final two years of his contract.

Bosh is apparently willing to take a pay cut from what he was owed next year so that Miami can bolster a team that was dominated by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA championship series this month.

If Wade and James are also willing to accept pay cuts, Miami could look at adding a proven free agent from outside.

On Thursday, the Heat apparently hoped to appeal to James when they put together a draft-day trade to acquire the rights to collegiate star Shabazz Napier.

Napier was touted by James this year as the country’s top college point guard, and while James was already heading into free agency by draft day, Napier said he hoped he’d get a chance to team with “King” James in Miami.

“I don’t know if I’m bringing him back,” Napier said. “I would love it. … I’ve been to his camps. Me and him chatted a few times at his camps. He’s just a special thing.

“It’s just something special to know that one of the best players in the world thinks about you and appreciates your talent. That’s something that I’m so humble for.”

The Heat reached the NBA finals in each of James’ four seasons with the club, winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 before the Spurs denied their three-peat bid.

On Tuesday James said he would opt out of his contract, which would allow him to test free agency starting on July 1.

But the move does not prevent James or the others from re-signing with the Heat.

Serena stunned by Cornet in epic upset

SERENA-CORNET LONDON, June 28- Serena Williams crashed to her earliest exit at Wimbledon for nine years as the world number one suffered a shock 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss against French 24th seed Alize Cornet in the third round on Saturday.

Top seed Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, had reached at least the last 16 in each of her previous seven visits to the All England Club, but Cornet fought back from a set down to end that sequence in two hours and four minutes of gripping drama on Court One.

It was the shell-shocked 32-year-old’s earliest Wimbledon exit since her loss to Jill Craybas at the same stage in 2005.

Serena could have no complaints about an embarrassing defeat which continued a disappointing campaign for the 17-time Grand Slam champion, who has failed to get beyond the fourth round at any of the three majors so far this year.

After a sluggish start, Cornet produced some simply brilliant play in the final two sets and the reward for the best result of her career is a fourth round clash against Canadian 13th seed Eugenie Bouchard on Monday.

It will be the 24-year-old’s first appearance in the second week of Wimbledon at the eighth attempt and only her second career fourth round appearance at a Grand Slam.

Cornet, who celebrated one of the great Wimbledon upsets by kissing the turf in jubilation, said: “I just can’t believe it. A few years ago I couldn’t even play on grass. I was so bad.

“To beat Serena at Wimbledon, wow, it is just a dream. It is the biggest upset in the tournament because she is the world number one and has won here so many times.

“I thought it was going to be tough when I lost the first set but finally I did it.

“I can’t believe that I did it myself. It is a great moment. I’ve been working so hard and this is the reward.”

Serena had arrived in south-west London desperate to make amends for her shock first round exit against Garbine Muguruza at the French Open last month, a chastening result which followed her Australian Open fourth round defeat against Ana Ivanovic.

But instead she departs seething after another lacklustre display that leaves her position as the sport’s dominant force suddenly looking uncertain.

She failed to heed the warning signs from her defeat against Cornet in the Dubai semi-finals earlier this year and there was an early hint of the drama to come as the Frenchwoman broke Williams in the opening game.

Serena broke back before rain brought a halt to proceedings at deuce in the third game and when the weather finally improved four and a half hours later she looked set to cruise through.

Williams broke for a 3-1 lead and then secured the decisive second break that clinched the first set.

That should have been the signal for Williams to close out the victory, but she suddenly went flat, losing her rhythm, and Cornet broke twice to race into a 5-0 lead.

Serena was being so out-played that it was almost a surprise when she held to serve to avoid the humiliation of failing to win a single game in a set at a Grand Slam for the first time since 1999.

But Cornet continued to torment Williams with some brilliant groundstrokes and the American had to stave off four break points at the start of the final set, prompting a defiant roar and clenched fist in the direction of her opponent.

Even that couldn’t rattle Cornet and she broke in the fifth game before delivering the knockout blow with another break for a 5-2 lead.

Serena staged a brief revival to make Cornet serve out the match, but it was too late to ruffle the ice-cool Frenchwoman, who held to love before collapsing to the floor in exhaustion and joy.
